Ça y est, c'est parti! Le premier organisme entièrement synthétique (fabriqué de toutes pièces) vient d'être créé par des scientifiques du J. Craig Venter Institute (1). La course aux applications commerciales est désormais lancée (2), mais certains émettent déjà des réserves (3).

L'équipe du Dr Svante Pääbo à l'Institut Max Planck en Allemagne a récemment montré que des gènes des hommes de Néanderthal survivent en nous (1, 2, 3). Hein?!? Comment est-ce que c'est que ça as-tu bin pu arriver? Puisque nous sommes sur le sujet de Neanderthaliens: Si vous êtes l'un des maudits chanceux qui recevrez le nouveau jouet d'Apple demain aujourd'hui, vous pourrez voir de quoi vous auriez l'air en homme primitif.

Il y a quelques semaines, j'ai entendu quelqu'un parler d'étudiant gradué sur une émission québécoise en balado-diffusion - La semaine verte, si ma mémoire est bonne. Ça faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas entendu cette expression. Surtout, ça m'a rappelé le temps lorsque moi-même j'étais étudiant gradué. Un collègue m'avait alors proposé d'illustrer une série d'anglicismes, dont l'idée pour ce billet de blog. Merci Denis Lauzer pour l'inspiration.

This one is not easy to translate, since it deals with a French anglicism. In English, a graduate student is a person who has earned a scholarly degree, e.g. a Bachelor's or a Master's. In Quebec (and also in Belgium, I've just learned), "Graduate Student" has been simply borrowed and turned into "étudiant gradué", which literally means a student with gradation marks (or measurements). I guess that the appropriate term would be "étudiant diplômé" or "étudiant de cycle supérieur, i.e a student who has earned a diploma or a student graduate studies, respectively. In France, they use the terms "Mastère" (pronounce: Ma-stair-uh, rolling the 'R' with a guttural sound) for a Master's candidate or "thèsard/thèsarde" (Tay-zar/Tay-zard-uh, masculin/feminin) for PhD candidates. IMHO, those don't sound much better.
